Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

Summers remarked in a release that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their development".

The prominent academic, who once presided over the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

The newly public emails demonstrated that the economist communicated with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the AI firm stated it respected the economist's decision to step down.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," OpenAI commented.

Legislative Background

This announcement comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on recently to approve a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its records on the case.

The bill will afterward move to the office of the White House for approval. The President has stated he plans to endorse the legislation, after reversing his stance on the issue following objections from his followers.

A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the Congressional committee last week included multiple high-profile figures in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The messages revealed that Summers and the financier regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to connect Summers to prominent global figures.

After the emails were made available with the public, the former official said he accepted "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he desired "to restore confidence and mend relationships with the persons most important to me".

Career Background

The professor served in leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He led the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public roles earlier on this week, he said he would maintain his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in Washington where he was a prominent member, confirmed that the economist was no longer affiliated with the institution.

He entered the leadership of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
