Warning: Spoilers for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In the episode, a look back reveals that fan-favorite character Alastor the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his human life. Knowing full well he was headed to the underworld, he established communication with the realm beyond in advance to secure a powerful role there. Rosie, the charismatic leader Hell’s cannibal community, promised Alastor he would become “the strongest Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his eternal spirit.
This prompts an important query: How is this character powerful enough to raise Alastor over all other Demonic Sinners?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the initial building block in a much bigger story that involves a great deal, leading into season 3,” the creator states. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she so strong? The answer could be many things, but the answer is in season 3. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”
There’s no telling the duration viewers will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The production companies have approved the third and fourth seasons, but the showrunner frequently remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons are undated. Still, she says holding off on those details is a crucial aspect of maintaining the second season's focus where it belongs.
“The challenge of any agreement with infernal beings, or stories that have enigmas, is giving the audience just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that gradually, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I'm very excited.”
Mysteries Resolved in Season 3
The showrunner promises that season 3 will tackle the questions fans have been posing, like why Rosie commanded Alastor to disappear for a seven-year period, which weakened his influence in Hell.
“The whole seven years, and the deals these humans are making, and all that — it contributes to a bigger narrative,” she reveals.
In the meantime, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode provides a further look into how the core cast of Demonic Sinners looked like as humans, the second after seeing another character's historical human form in the second episode. The creator says that significant consideration went into the visual creation of these forms.
“The human versions of the characters carry so much weight,” she notes. “They range from looking really different from their infernal version to seeming almost identical. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was a little bit of a debate internally between going with a design that represents the personality, as opposed to going with an option that's historically correct. We opted for creating a design that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the biggest debate over Pentious’ human design was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘No one really had long hair of that style in Victorian-era London.’ But simultaneously, we believe the silhouette is so important, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We kind of gave the excuse that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there is always a solution. As we create the human versions of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to explore and determine. I'm excited for fans to view additional of what the human forms look like.”
