Heat and Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories After Player Arrests
Miami put up eighty-six opening half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a decisive 146 to 114 victory against the Grizzlies in their initial NBA game after guard Terry Rozier was detained for alleged illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a sweeping federal probe into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.
But, the Heat were focused as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37-year existence.
Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and afterwards said Rozier had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he faces the situation."
Portland also secured their initial match since the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a convincing 139-119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner also mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he played for the Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"Moreover two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
